Terrace Guide

In
1964 a very successful Recreational Survey was taken for the
City of Temple Terrace by the Temple Terrace Woman's Club. This
was accomplished in conjunction with the Hillsborough County
Planning Commission. A city directory which was published
by Wilford Raymond and endorsed by the Police Department and
Chamber of Commerce, proved to be very inaccurate when the club
members began working on the survey. As the club women corrected
the street listings and obtained phone numbers it became more
obvious that the City needed a more accurate reference. In
1965 TTWC launched the idea to collaborate with Mr.
Raymond and publish a City Directory as a community service
which would also serve as a club fund raiser. In 1965 TTWC
decided to publish its own directory and adopted this as a main
fund raising project.
The Chamber agreed to endorse the new ‘Business and
Residential Directory’ and the City of Temple Terrace gave TTWC
permission to use the Water Departments customer listing to
update the directory. The first directory was published in
1966 as ‘The Temple Terrace Business and Residential
Directory’. The directory is unique because residences and
business are listed by street as well as alphabetically.
Churches, clubs and organizations are listed, data on the City
and a fold out map of the city limits is updated to include
annexed areas as they occur. For over 30 years TTWC has
published what is now known as the Temple Terrace Guide.
Dedicated effort by the entire membership to provide The Guide
to every residence and business in the City free of charge has
been very rewarding. The members and their families
personally deliver the Guide. It has been estimated that, during
its existence, the Guide has raised nearly one quarter of a
million dollars which has been channeled into community
projects.

All departments of the City of Temple Terrace receive free
copies of the Guide and use it is as a reference because of the
listings and the annually updated map of streets of Temple
Terrace.
It is essential to the Police and Fire Departments. A supply of
guides is furnished to the Water Department which provides a
free copy to new residents and businesses when they apply for
water hookup. The Chamber of Commerce receives free copies for
distribution to parties requesting information about Temple
Terrace.
From a distribution of only a few hundred Guides in the
beginning years, to over 8,000 copies per year have been
distributed to residents.
Many members have served as Chairman and Treasurers of the Guide
over the years. We owe a great deal of gratitude to them for
their performance, dedication, diligence and service.
