In
1965 a film called “The Riddle of the Friendly Stranger”
which warned of the dangers of strangers enticing children to go
off with them, was shown by members of TTWC in all public
and private schools in Temple
Terrace. A
Basketball Court
for public use was built at the “Woodmont Annex” in 1967. It
was in constant use until 1994 when residents complained about
the noise at night and the trashing of the area with paper and
soft drink cans, for 27 years it was a real asset to the young
people who enjoyed using it.
The Temple Terrace Police Department has several programs in
place which have benefited from donations by TTWC. In
1986 A Golf Cart, especially equipped for use in the shopping
areas of the city as a crime deterrent, was donated by TTWC to
the Police Department at a cost of $4,000. Other items that have
been donated to the Police Department include- a McGruff,
“Take A Bite Out of Crime” Costume which is used to instruct
children in the schools about protecting them-selves from
strangers, and five hand puppets, with cassette tapes to
demonstrate self protection measures, were also donated. A Rape
Victim’s Kit used for the victim of this crime is provided and
new ones are furnished when needed.
TTWC members have worked over the years at voter
registration booths as poll workers and with absentee voters. In
1994-95, members chaired a team that went into four nursing
homes, registering over 80 patients, and assisted absentee
voters with their ballots. This department helps with the
Senior Expo and Business Expo that is held at the Lightfoot
Center
every year. Members also work with the Fire Department on
their annual “Open House”.
