TTWC
conducted a door-to-door campaign within the City of Temple
Terrace for donations to the “Crusade for Cancer” for
thirteen years from 1961 through 1974. The “Connie Newton
Award” was won by The Club four times and the trophy was given
to The Club for outstanding coverage and total donations
received. A Blood Bank was established for citizens of Temple
Terrace
by members in 1965. In 1969 a $1,000 donation furnished a room
at the Salvation Home.
The first non-denominational Prayer Breakfast was held on
January 23, 1974
by TTWC at the Tampa Savings and Loan Company in Temple
Terrace
for members and invited guests only. Thirty-four attended the
breakfast. The idea for this program came from a District
VIII workshop. Because it was so well accepted, it became an
annual event usually held in January or February. Ministers from
various churches were asked to speak. For many years club
members prepared all the food. Some years the breakfast was held
in the Fellowship Hall of the Presbyterian Church. It moved to
the Woodmont Clubhouse in 1981 where more guests could be
accommodated. By 1993 TTWC agreed to open this event to
the public and it became a City-Wide Prayer Breakfast held at
The Lightfoot Center. In 1995, it was held at the Temple Terrace
Golf and Country Club. Approximately 300 attended the Breakfast.

“Phone A Friend” for Latchkey Kids was a program established
at
Northside
Center
in 1986. TTWC was one of the first to donate to
this successful program. Children at home alone after
school hours are able to reach out and call trained volunteers
at the Center to talk about their day and or problems. “A Red
Ribbon Campaign” to “Just Say NO TO Drugs” and “Proud to
be Drug Free” was coordinated by a past president of the Club.
All school children in the area were provided with red ribbons.
Large red ribbon bows and flags were made by this department.
The bows were placed on every public building in
Temple
Terrace
.
The flags were placed on the flag poles and on light poles at
every intersection. Club members and city officials spoke at
special school ceremonies about the dangers of drugs.
“A Red Carpet” campaign introduced in the schools by the
Florida Department of Education Commissioner, involved some 20
club members of the Club. TTWC members were asked to
inspect ten public schools in Hillsborough
County
to see if the schools were performing in compliance with the
stipulations outlined in the program. The program was to make
the public schools more aware that the parents and public should
be given a warm welcome at the schools along with information
about activities and special programs offered in the schools.
This inspection gave insight to the club members about what was
offered in the local schools to students and their families.
