Woman's Club Education Department
“Exposures”
(to art) Program in Riverhills and Temple Terrace Elementary
Schools was started in 1969. Prints of famous paintings were
framed and hung at the schools. Films and speakers were
used to introduce the children to the artists’ works.
Many former school teachers in the club volunteer at the schools
(at one time there were 24 certified retired teachers in The
Club). Non-teachers also tutor and work with special programs
such as; the PTA, PTSA, King High Math Team, HOBY (Hugh
O’Brien’s Youth) which is a nationwide program that holds
Leadership Conferences and seminars for children from First
Grade to the 10th Grades. Three schools in the area were
involved in HOBY.
This department has provided hostesses for teacher retirement
parties and most recently sponsored a reception in 1993 for a
retiring principal of
King
High
School.
Delegates to Girls’ State and Boys’ State have received
Funding from TTWC. Since 1965, A Licensed Practical
Nurse (LPN) Grant-in-Aid has been offered to women who are
graduating as LPN’s but need money to cover their
transportation to Tallahassee
to
take their exams. Originally started at Brewster Vocational School,
students at Ervin Vo-Tech are now recipients of these grants.
